Project Profile: New Flooring System for Canning Company Stands Up to Tough Environmental Demands

Contractor installs new flooring system for 33,000-square-foot food processing facility in just 10 days.

The Challenge:

Arizona Canning Co. produces and distributes canned foods throughout the country. The canning and sanitation processes wreaked havoc on the plant’s floors, which weren’t originally designed to come in contact with chemicals, carts, hot liquids and other hazards. Such abuse led to staining, delamination and other obvious signs of wear and tear throughout the 33,000-square-foot facility.

What’s more, the installation team had to abide by an extremely tight timeline – just 10 days – and work around a giant conveyor belt that couldn’t be removed due to the excess downtime. There wasn’t any time for trial and error during this tricky installation.

The Team:

Five Star Concrete Services team up with AZ Partsmaster to install the new flooring system.

Five Star Concrete Services provides various concrete services throughout Arizona, Colorado, Nevada and New Mexico, including concrete coating applications, concrete cutting, core drilling, grinding, and break and removal.

AZ Partsmaster offers MRO supplies, tools, equipment, and other maintenance and home improvement parts at affordable prices.

The Solution:

The new flooring solution consisted of two systems:

  • Armor-Rez CQ 150 is a 1/8-inch thick decorative color quartz flooring system with a chemical-resistant epoxy topcoat. It offers excellent abrasion, impact and chemical resistance.
  • CastorCrete™ SL is a flowable polyurethane mortar installed at 1/8 to 1/4-inch thickness to protect concrete from physical and chemical abuse. It is very resistant to impact and abrasion, and is unaffected by animal fats and most solvents. CastorCrete SL has a co-efficient of thermal expansion similar to concrete, allowing it to maintain adhesion when subjected to the thermal shock of hot water.

CastorCrete SL was installed in 1,000 square feet of the canning area that had to withstand frequent contact with hot water and chemicals.

Armor-Rez CQ 150 was installed throughout the remainder of the 33,000-square-foot facility, which required abrasion and slip-resistance due to frequent foot and cart traffic. It also had to stand up to chemicals used to sanitize the area.

The installation team had to ensure a seamless application across both systems, which butted up against one another. To accomplish this, they saw cut a keyway to act as a perimeter surrounding the CastorCrete installation. The Armor-Rez was applied surrounding this perimeter to create a flush application.

And as an added challenge, the team had to work around a large conveyor belt that couldn’t be removed or shifted because it would create too much production downtime. They did so flawlessly – and still met a very tight timeline over the holidays, enabling the company to return to service in just 10 days.
